Aviva Makes it Easier than ever for Corporations to Bring Host Data Securely to their Users’ Web-browsers
Newest release of Aviva for Java provides increased security, user and administrator features to facilitate the out-of-the-box transition from legacy green screen to browser-based host access.
MONTREAL, July 16, 2001 — Aviva Inc., a worldwide provider of secure host access solutions, today announced the release of Aviva for Java 3.10, its multi-host access solution for Java-enabled Web browsers. New to this release are enhanced security options as well as user and administrator usability tools, proving once again that the product has both flexibility and strength when it comes to offering corporations a secure, "thin-client", browser-based mainframe, AS/400 and Unix host connectivity solution.
An out-of-the-box solution, Aviva for Java provides corporations with a zero-deployment thin-client for accessing host-based data. Terminal emulation software - in the form of a Java applet - dynamically downloads and is cached to the client computer, so that software distribution or repeated downloads are virtually eliminated. There is no need to install emulation software on each and every user’s workstation, or to modify existing host applications. All that users require is a Java-enabled Web browser.
In addition to providing an out-of-the-box host access solution, Aviva for Java is equipped with a powerful and feature-rich set of APIs. “For the past several months, our company has been evaluating different APIs which support 3270 host access via the Internet. We needed a web compatible product which could offer the functionality of traditional HLLAPI -- from basic 'screen scraping' to file transfer -- together with host-to-local printing”, stated Kenneth Chui, a software developer with Canadian Securities Registration Systems. “Aviva for Java was the only API we came across that supported all the features we were looking for. In addition, we found that the tool suite was easy to use and well integrated. Equally impressive was the support that we received from the company at every step of the deployment,” Chui added.
Advanced Security Options
Aviva for Java offers complete end-to-end security through its advanced SSL security options, including support for multiple levels and types of security as well as direct encryption with any SSL-enabled TN server. Complementing the security features of the product is the integrated Aviva Security Redirector (ASR). The Aviva Security Redirector SSL-enables any TN server as well as to hide the host address from the Internet. ASR adds a new dimension to host access security for any TN server running on a mainframe or AS/400.
Additionally, Aviva for Java now supports client security certificates so that clients are able to authenticate themselves to the server. Security certificates can also be created using Aviva for Java’s built-in Certificate Management Utility.
Moreover, Aviva for Java’s multi-user support via user profiles enables administrators to create profiles that define the settings and sessions available to a specific group of users when installed on a Web server. As such, Aviva for Java provides group profile capabilities as well as the ability to manage permissions. Using the operating system security mechanism, administrators simply set user access rights to group profiles, allowing simple and quick deployment of large user groups and reducing the amount of support calls for the corporation.
Aviva for Java is part of Aviva's secure host access product offering, which includes Aviva Web-to-Host Server, providing HTML-based host access over secure HTTP, and Aviva for Desktops, providing full-function SNA and TN Windows connectivity with SSL security.
Rounding out the new capabilities of Aviva for Java 3.10 are:
- Migration tools – support for the HLLAPI interface means that users can continue to use their own legacy 16- and 32-bit HLLAPI applications within the context of the new emulation, thus reaping the benefits Aviva for Java has to offer;
- Out-of-the-box usability tools such as emulation screen configuration so that green screens can be enhanced with user-friendly interfaces (i.e. 3D-View mode and hotspots) making it easier than ever to navigate host screens;
- Support for the Netscape 6 Navigator as well as 5250 printer sessions.
