Session properties
Communication tab
Note: You only have access to these configuration options if your Administrator has
granted you permission.
The Communication tab is where you specify the host and the port number on the host to which the session will connect, and the device that it will use. You can choose to have the session connect automatically when it is started, and re-connect automatically if the connection is closed by the host during a session.

Configuration options
Host name or IP address
Identifies the host or TN server to which you want to connect. You can specify the host as either a DNS name or an IP address.
IP addresses identify computers on a TCP/IP network. An IP address comprises a twelve-digit number written in dotted decimal notation. The numbers that make up the address are split into four groups of three digits separated by periods. For example, 123.123.123.123
DNS (domain name system) allows names to be used in place of IP addresses to identify computers on the Internet. For example, tnserver.avivasolutions.com.
TCP port
Specifies the port number that AFJ connects to on the host or TN server. By default, the port number is 23. If your host or TN server uses a non-standard TELNET port, specify the appropriate value.
Device name
(3270 and 5250 only)
Specifies the device name of the resource that this session will use on the TN server. A device or logical unit (LU) is the point of access into an SNA network and provides the means for AFJ to reach a particular host service.
Associated Printer
(3270 only)
Associates a printer session to a display session. The printer session will be activated automatically when the display session is activated. AFJ supports the TN3270 Printer Associate feature as specified by IETF RFC 2355 ('TN3270 Enhancements').
Terminal type
(VT220 only)
Specifies the terminal type of the Telnet server that the destination will connect to. AFJ supports VT220 (7 and 8 bits), VT100, and VT52 terminals.
Connect automatically when session is started
If you select this check box, the session automatically connects to the host when it opens.
Re-connect automatically if connection is lost
If you select this check box, the session automatically re-connects if the connection is lost.
Keep-Alive
(3270 and 5250 only)
Type
Specify the type of Keep-Alive packets to be used.
Disabled: Uses the TCP/IP stack instead of Keep-Alive packets to monitor the connection to the server. This method requires fewer system resources but is infrequent.
NOP: Uses IAC NOP as the Keep-Alive packet. A NOP (No Operation) command is periodically sent to the TN server. Although no answer is required from the server, the TCP/IP stack detects when there is a problem delivering the packet.
TIMING-MARK: Use IAC DO TIMING-MARK as the Keep-Alive packet. A Timing Mark is periodically sent to the TN server, and a response is required. This method uses the most system resources, but is the most effective way to detect connection problems.
Frequency
Specify the amount of time (in seconds) that AFJ waits after data has been sent or received, before sending a NOP or Timing-Mark command. Range: 5 to 32767 seconds. Default: 600 seconds (10 minutes).
Timer
Specify how long (in seconds) that AFJ will wait for an answer from the TN server after a Timing Mark command is sent. If no response is received before the timer expires, AFJ notifies you that the session has been disconnected. Range: 5 to 32767 seconds. Default: 60 seconds.
